About The Economist
The Economist, originally recognized as the London Financial Guide, made its debut on January 10, 1888, and later underwent a rebranding to become The Economist on February 13 of the same year. Its objective was to support “The Honest Financier, the Authentic Investor, the Trustworthy Broker, the Legitimate Director, and the Legal Speculator.” Initially, it was a concise four-page periodical primarily serving London’s financial community, in competition with the more established Financial News, founded in 1884.
On January 2, 1893, The Economist adopted its unique light pink paper, setting it apart. Nevertheless, this choice resulted in increased expenses due to the special dyeing requirements.
In 1945, Brendan Bracken orchestrated the merger of The Economist and Financial News, bringing an end to their 57-year rivalry. This merger expanded the readership and introduced the Lex column, enhancing the publication’s content.
